What estrogen actually does

Nobody told you this, but estrogen was never really a "female hormone." It's a system-wide hormone that happens to also run your reproductive cycle. Calling it reproductive is like calling water "a shower ingredient."

Your brain has estrogen receptors. So do your bones, your blood vessels, your gut lining, your joints, your skin. When estradiol swings and then drops during perimenopause, every one of those systems gets the memo.

In your brain

Estrogen helps regulate serotonin and dopamine — the mood chemicals. It supports memory and word retrieval. That's why brain fog, anxiety, and "I can't find the word I want" are some of the earliest signs.

In your bones

Estrogen tells your body to keep building bone. Without it, bone density drops fast — especially in the first few years after menopause. This is why HRT is also, quietly, bone medicine.

In your heart and blood vessels
